Raúl Jiménez seals Mexico’s win against nine-man South Africa in World Cup opener
At the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026, Mexico defeated South Africa 2–0 at the Estadio Azteca.
Mexico took the lead in the ninth minute through Julián Quiñones, before Raúl Jiménez sealed the win with a second-half goal in the 67th minute.
South Africa were reduced to nine players after two red cards, with Sphephelo Sithole sent off early in the second half and substitute Themba Zwane dismissed late on. Mexico also finished with 10 men following a red card shown to César Montes.
Despite the numerical advantages, Mexico were unable to add further goals but secured a winning start to the tournament. South Africa struggled to create chances and were widely outplayed.
The result gives Mexico three points in the group and marks the first victory of the 2026 World Cup, while South Africa begin the competition with a defeat.
